As long as you remain in the conflict, coming and going, tension will build until it reaches a tipping point. You can finally resolve the issue and choose either to change or remain, or the situation can be taken out of your hands and decided for you.
During the transitional stage, behavior patterns might be erratic, and on-again, off-again situations are not uncommon. For example, before you hand in your resignation and quit your job, your mind might be elsewhere, and your performance might suffer. If you are thinking of ending a relationship, you might be loving one moment and cold the next. You tend to react impulsively without any consistency while you come and go. You want matters to be resolved quickly. Stagnation and delay are difficult to tolerate and only increase your stress.
