Secondary progressions, also referred to as major progressions, are calculated using a symbolic formula known as the "day for a year" principle. In this system, the planetary positions in the ephemeris for each day immediately following an individual's birth are considered symbolically resonant with each corresponding year of their life. For example, the celestial map for 30 days after birth represents the progressed chart for the 30th year of life. This method establishes a symbolic, rather than literal, connection between short and long units of time, providing a map of an individual's psychological maturation and inner development. 

Because progressions move very slowly, the aspects they form are rare and long-lasting. For the inner planets like Mercury, Venus, and Mars, an aspect can be active for approximately two years, sometimes longer if the planet is stationary. This extended duration necessitates the use of very tight orbs of influencetypically less than 1° for accurate interpretation. The rarity and longevity of these aspects mean that when they become exact, they mark periods of major personal development and self-expression..
